Al Ashkharah

AL ASHKHARAH, Nov. 23, 2022

We leave Ras Al Jinz early, at 8.00, because it’ a long way to go. I noticed on Google Maps there are some pink lakes on the road, near Al Ashkharah, and I really want to see them. At the first point where we stop we can’t see anything, but it could also be that they dried up.

The road is in perfect condition. In some places it runs alongside the sea, but, most of the time, the desert

The village of Al Ashkharah is a kind of tiny Sur, with a harbour where the usual Bengalis workers are busy with the dhows maintenance.

With the pink lakes we are lucky shortly after with the second one reported by Maps, which, this time, is clearly visible! We are the only ones at that moment to enjoy the very particular landscape, so doubly happy!! The pigmentation is due to an algae with a high salt content and carotenoids. The same one eaten by the flamingos, which in fact in certain periods populate the lake, and which however are now, unfortunately, missing as we pass by..
